Driving Sustainability

Driving Sustainability at Apex Pumps:

this is our journey towards Net Zero

At Apex Pumps, sustainability isn’t a buzzword we throw around to sound good.  In fact, it is quite the opposite, it has become central to the way we operate our business.  If you want to buy from a British based manufacturer with a clear goal when it comes to sustainability, Apex Pumps are the business for you.

As a proud British manufacturer, we’ve always stood by our commitment to quality, innovation, and reliability. In more recent years, that commitment has expanded to include a clear and ambitious goal with regards to sustainability. Achieve Net Zero across our organisation.  Simple right?

Well, last year, we took significant steps towards that goal, investing not just in equipment, but in the long-term future of our industry, our community, and in turn, the planet.

Last Summer, we installed a 360-panel, 150kW solar array at our Bristol factory. This investment, funded by reinvesting 50% of our record annual profits, has already produced 175 MWh of 100% green energy in its first year.  We are already seeing the investment pay off and deliver the results we were hoping for.

The best thing about it? The impact is measurable:

  • 37.8% reduction in grid electricity use in 2024 (with even greater reduction totals expected at the end of 2025)
  • 40% reduction in CO₂e emissions compared with our 2023 baseline, certified by Notch Carbon Accounting.
  • A Gold Notch Award recognising our achievements in carbon reduction.

However, sustainability goes beyond energy.  We’ve also invested in a new Mazak Quickturn turning centre, which allows us to bring shaft and component production in-house. This eliminates the environmental impact of shipping, shortens lead times for our customers, and ensures that our machinery runs on 100% green energy from our solar array or renewable suppliers.

We are also planning on some stainless steel castings to be made here in the UK. Supported by our new Mazak Horizontal Machining Centre, we will reduce shipping emissions even more, while boosting the efficiency of our pumps themselves, delivering both environmental and performance benefits.

Other efforts extend beyond the factory and the work we do.

Other endeavours have included:

  • Wildflower meadows planted around the site encourage pollinators and biodiversity, something you can create in spite of the industrial setting.
  • A reinvigorated cycle-to-work scheme has been embraced by our team, with over 50% of staff now travelling by bus, bike, or on foot…we see a cycle team APEX on the horizon!
  • Our company fleet is now fully electric, ensuring zero emissions from business travel in the UK.

Pumps are at the heart of almost every industry, including industries making a positive difference to the planet. From clean water and food production to electric vehicles and environmental treatment processes, our pumps are a fundamental part of their operations.  By making our pumps more sustainable to produce, we’re not only reducing our own footprint but also supporting industries driving wider positive change across the globe.

Achieving a Gold Award for carbon reduction in our first year of measured efforts is a milestone we are incredibly proud of, but it’s only the beginning. With further investments, new designs, and a focus on sustainability supported by the whole workplace, we are determined to keep pushing forward.

At Apex Pumps, our mission is clear: to manufacture high-quality, Made in Britain pump solutions, that serve our customers and support a sustainable future.
