Why Reshoring Matters

As global supply chains continue to evolve, manufacturers across the engineering sector are increasingly recognising the benefits of reshoring production. Bringing manufacturing closer to home is no longer simply about reducing lead times, it has become a strategic decision that supports sustainability, quality, resilience and long-term customer value.

At Apex Pumps, reshoring forms an important part of our commitment to British manufacturing and our vision for a more sustainable future.

What is reshoring?

Reshoring is the process of bringing manufacturing operations back to the UK after production has previously been outsourced overseas.

For many industrial manufacturers, the disruption experienced in recent years highlighted the importance of resilient supply chains, reliable delivery and greater control over production. As a result, more companies are investing in UK manufacturing to improve operational flexibility while reducing environmental impact.

As a proud Made in Britain member, Apex Pumps has embraced this approach by continuing to expand our in-house manufacturing capabilities.

Investing in British manufacturing

Manufacturing high-quality centrifugal pumps requires exceptional precision, consistency and engineering expertise.

To support increasing customer demand and strengthen our UK manufacturing capabilities, Apex Pumps has invested significantly in advanced CNC machining technology, including our Mazak Quick Turn lathe and Mazak HCN NEO Horizontal Machining Centre.

These investments allow us to manufacture more pump components in-house, giving us greater control over every stage of production while maintaining the high standards our customers expect from British engineering.

Producing pumps closer to our customers also enables:

  • Improved quality control
  • Greater manufacturing flexibility
  • Faster response times
  • Reduced dependence on overseas suppliers
  • Shorter lead times
  • Increased supply chain resilience

How reshoring supports sustainability

Sustainability is no longer an optional consideration within manufacturing, it is an essential part of responsible business.

Reshoring contributes to sustainability in several ways.

By manufacturing more products within the UK, transport distances can be significantly reduced, lowering associated carbon emissions while improving supply chain efficiency.

At Apex Pumps, this strategy sits alongside wider sustainability initiatives across our manufacturing facility.

Our investment in a 150kW on-site solar array generated approximately 175MWh of renewable electricity during its first year, contributing to a 37.8% reduction in grid electricity consumption and an overall 40% reduction in CO₂e emissions compared with our 2023 baseline.

These achievements have been recognised through industry awards, including:

  • Winner: Sustainable Contribution for a Better World at the BPMA Pump Industry Awards 2026
  • Runner Up: Sustainability Initiative of the Year at the Made in Britain Impact Awards

Together, reshoring and renewable energy investment demonstrate how modern manufacturing can reduce environmental impact while maintaining exceptional engineering standards.

Engineering pumps built to last

Sustainability extends beyond how products are manufactured.

Designing reliable centrifugal pumps with long service lives also helps reduce environmental impact by minimising maintenance requirements, reducing waste and extending equipment lifespan.

At Apex Pumps, every pump is designed with performance, durability and efficiency in mind, ensuring dependable operation across demanding industrial applications where reliability is critical.

Supporting sustainable innovation

We’re proud to work alongside organisations developing technologies that make a real environmental difference.

One example is our partnership with Matter, whose award-winning filtration technology captures microplastics before they enter water systems.

Reliable pump performance plays a critical role in maintaining consistent filtration efficiency, demonstrating how precision-engineered pumps can support innovative environmental solutions across industry.

The future of UK pump manufacturing

As industries continue to prioritise sustainability, resilience and supply chain security, reshoring will play an increasingly important role in the future of manufacturing.

By investing in advanced machining technology, expanding UK production and reducing our environmental footprint, Apex Pumps is helping to demonstrate how British engineering can deliver both exceptional performance and sustainable manufacturing.

Our continued investment reflects our commitment to building pumps that not only perform reliably today but also contribute to a more resilient and sustainable future for customers across the UK and around the world.
